The Undergraduate Journal of Public Health at the University of Michigan

There are presently no open calls for submissions.

The printed journal is comprised of four distinct sections: Independent Research, Literature Reviews, Field Notes, and editorial investigations denoted as “Perspectives.”

The Independent Research section of the journal features student-driven investigations conducted by undergraduates from the University of Michigan campus and beyond. These submissions will include but are not limited to: senior honors theses, research in conjunction with a faculty member, and independent analyses of public data sets.

The Literature Review section of the journal contains articles that integrate a large percentage of information currently in the field about a particular topic. Writers will synthesize this information into a comprehensive analysis that should yield something novel to add to the discussion of this topic. Literature reviews are an important aspect of our mission to increase awareness of public health. They will highlight information in the field that readers may not be aware of and distill new discoveries along the way.

The Field Notes section of the journal is structured after the “Notes from the Field” section of the American Journal of Public Health. This section will give students a formal avenue to communicate their results and observations from their personal experience. These experiences may be related to independent research or observations from a public health project that they carried out. This section is particularly important for students who have had relevant public health experiences, but did not have an opportunity to develop their findings into a full academic research paper.

“Perspectives” is a section of the journal that is analogous to opinion-editorials in newspapers. It is an opportunity for students to argue a perspective on a relevant public health topic or issue while conducting meaningful and focused research. “Perspectives” may be compared to long editorial explorations published in The Journal of the Medical Association (JAMA) in regard to the depth of knowledge and subtlety of argument.

Our second issue will be published in April 2018. For more information, visit our website at https://www.ujph.org/
